They mean the same thing, but "non-autistic" is less jargon-y and more people would understand it. == Citing community consensus ==

How should we assert "distilled wisdom" such as ABA being harmful? (It seems important to do so, see e.g. this thread: https://twitter.com/WIRblog/status/1563002859246956544)

We could use phrases like "Many people within the autistic community agree that...", but we want to avoid "false controversies" (thanks @fochti for this phrase!) where it seems like there's disagreement on a topic when really there's broad agreement.

Much of what the #ActuallyAutistic community has done is share our experiences until we collectively distill certain things that seem broadly true to us. This is like What We Do, and it would be really valuable to share this knowledge with with new #ActuallyAutistic people and with the world at large.

We're talking about knowledge about knowledge: not just "ABA is harmful", but "There's #ActuallyAutistic consensus that ABA is harmful"

One possibility would be to have have certain special citations:

* [community-consensus]: means there's rough community consensus within the #ActuallyAutistic community
* [community-controversy]: means there's meaningful controversy within the #ActuallyAutistic community; sizeable groups on more than one side

Examples:

Tags like "[community-consensus]" could link to an explanation of what community consensus means, how knowledge is distilled within the #ActuallyAutistic community, etc.

Very open to suggestions about what the actual tags should be. For example maybe instead of [community-consensus] it should be [actuallyautistic-consensus] or [autistic-consensus] or [aa-consensus] or [our-consensus] or [consensus] or [consensus-view] or...

Writing out the phrases feels a bit wordy, and also shoves the content of the sentence to the end. Could also be written the other way around:

* Most people within the #ActuallyAutistic prefer identity-first language, according to rough consensus within the community.

But this still feels wordy. I think I like the special citation form.

Another possibility (which we could do in addition to using tags like [community-consensus]) would be to have "citation storms", where we maybe cite like 50 or 100 Twitter threads of lived experience of #ActuallyAutistic people.

But a citation storm can't stand in for something like [community-consensus] tags, because a citation storm on its own doesn't assert that there ''aren't'' other popular views within the community.

If others prefer uppercase, my suggestion would be: (1) use uppercase 'A' to refer to the Autistic community as a distinct subculture, but (2) use lowercase 'a' to refer to autistic people when talking about our neurotype itself. Thus a person could be 'autistic' (the neurotype) without necessarily also being "Autistic" (participating in the Autistic community). There seems to be some bugs on this site that needs fixing.

Confirmation email fails to send to my email with this message:

But it's an all ascii gmail address, so I doubt special characters is the issue.

Also unknown errors probably should not be forwarded directly to the users, as that can reveal details about how the site is configured to potential hackers... like the fact that this is PHP based (though I think wiki's normally are, so it's not that interesting).

Theres no redirect from http://actuallyautistic.wiki to the https version, or is that intentional?
(I noticed because I just heard about this site on TikTok and typed in the full domain name directly and was surprised to se a broken lock icon)

I actually like being able to see all these links in one spot. It lets you scan and get a sense of things. But because the list is pretty long, we could potentially move this entire section to an `Autistic traits` page. I also like this, for the moment. I actually like being able to see all these links in one spot. It lets you scan and get a sense of things. But because the list is pretty long, we could potentially move this entire section to an `Autistic traits` page. I actually like being able to see all these links in one spot. It lets you scan and get a sense of things. But because the list is pretty long, we could potentially move this entire section to an `Autistic traits` page. I also like this, for the moment. Absolutely love that this has been said, and strongly second this notion. It aligns with the perspective on thought diversity I wrote about in the "Job interviews" page. I feel like the sections need to be organized in some way... I don't think pure alphabetical order is ideal, because I think the ActuallyAutistic terms should be first, but there are other sections that would end up before it. Also, the Meta, Misc, and Talk sections might be best at the bottom. I was thinking maybe organize alphabetically, but in related groups -- all the entirely Autistic stuff first, then the neurological differences from NT's (the Senses section, Info processing section, etc), and then the sections about dating, work culture, etc. What do you all think? --[[User:Fire Eider|Fire Eider]] ([[User talk:Fire Eider|talk]]) 20:55, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

I think we'll soon want the Main page to be more about linking to other pages than about having all the info on one page, because wikis work best when pages are granular and interconnected. When a section gets too big to manage well on the Main page, give it its own page and put a link to it on Main. Main should soon be mostly a map for how to navigate the site's content. I say when things start to feel too crowded on Main, that's the time to extract content into its own page(s) and tidy up Main. We especially encourage articles informed by lived experience, and recognise that "objectivity" doesn't mean reinforcing the outgroup's status quo.

It's also safe to assume the reader is autistic, although they may only recently have discovered this fact. They may not yet know all the terminology, but they're happy to follow the links to learn more. This wiki is primarily by autistic people, for autistic people, although others are welcome to contribute.

We especially encourage a neurodiversity-affirming approach that suggests all neurotypes are equally valid, while simultaneously acknowledging that being neurodivergent in a neuro-typical society can be disabling.

== Page titles ==

Where possible, page titles should only have their first word capitalised. "Like this", "Not Like This". The exception is if the page is about something that is usually capitalised, such as a book.

Titles should be singular, not plural, where it makes sense to do so. For example, "Sense" instead of "Senses".

== Bold text ==

Try to incorporate the page title, or relevant parts of it, into the first sentence or paragraph and format the first instance of it as '''bold text'''. If the page title is "Autism", the first instance of the word "Autism" should be formatted as '''Autism''', for example.

== Sections and subsections ==

For longer pages it is often a good idea to use multiple sections to separate the text into different, visually distinct parts. It improves both readability as well as skimmability. You're currently reading the section ''Sections and subsections''.

If you get the feeling that a single section might contain too much text, try thinking about moving parts of it to another new section entirely, or splitting the section into multiple smaller subsections:
