Tone of voice

Often us autistic people don't understand and don't (intentionally or meaningfully) use tone of voice.

Trying to interpret what you understand as "tone of voice" often lead to misunderstandings between Autistic and Allistic people.

Please don't try to interpret our "tone of voice".

Please also don't try to communicate through your tone of voice to us. You're welcome to use it, but many of us won't be able to pick up on it, so don't rely on it exclusively to get your point across.

We will communicate through our words.

Remember to communicate more directly with us, we are not able to imply or suggest anything.

Ask us directly how we feel.

Thankyou.

An Autistic person.

Tone in text

Since tone can't really be read in text, "tone indicators" were developed. Some common ones are:

  • /gen (genuine)
  • /genq (genuine question)
  • /hj (half-joking)
  • /j (joking)
  • /lh (light-hearted)
  • /rq (rhetorical question)
  • /s (sarcasm/sarcastic)
  • /srs (serious)
